Position Summary:
The Associate Director, Strategic Procurement is responsible for strategic sourcing, outsourcing, procurement, and financial oversight of clinical studies and other Research & Development (R&D) activities. Partners with Clinical Operations, Development, Regulatory, Medical Affairs, Finance, and other R&D functions to manage external spending, optimize vendor relationships, and steward R&D investments.
Responsibilities:
- Develop outsourcing strategies and plans for R&D departments (focus on Clinical Studies).
- Lead R&D procurement point of contact for financial needs.
- Lead competitive sourcing, RFP development, and bid analysis.
- Evaluate outsourcing models and recommend options balancing quality, timelines, feasibility, and financial impact.
- Provide input into negotiation of financial business terms and manage R&D contracts.
- Support and coordinate vendor discount programs.
- Negotiate vendor business terms (scope, price, payment terms, SLAs).
- Develop and maintain forecasts for clinical programs and other R&D activities.
- Monitor spending vs. budget/forecast, identify variances, and recommend actions.
- Support monthly/quarterly financial close (accruals, invoice forecasting, reconciliations).
- Analyze resource utilization, vendor spend trends, and portfolio investment needs.
- Collaborate on long-range planning assumptions and multi-year cost projections.
- Provide executive reporting/dashboards on R&D expenditures and key metrics.
- Champion continuous improvement in procurement and financial governance.
Education/Experience Requirements:
- Bachelorβs degree in finance, business administration, life science, or related field (MBA preferred).
- 8+ years in procurement/outsourcing/contracts/vendor management/clinical ops/finance.
- 2+ years in a Clinical Research Organization, biotech, or pharmaceutical industry.
- Experience managing clinical study budgets, forecasting, accruals, and vendor financial performance.
- Experience working with CROs and other clinical service providers.
Additional Skills/Requirements:
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; Agiloft and Coupa (or similar) preferred.
- Strong financial modeling, variance analysis, executive reporting, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Excellent communication, organization, facilitation, and attention to detail; ability to multitask.
- Ability to travel up to 10% domestically.
Benefits/Compensation:
- Benefits include premium health and other listed offerings.
- Target base pay range: $150,000.00β$195,000.00.
