Role Summary

Associate Director, Obesity Metabolism and Muscle Disease — Regeneron seeks a leader in skeletal muscle physiology and biology to head its research and therapeutic development team. This leadership role requires deep expertise in skeletal muscle biology with a track record in translational research and therapeutic development. The successful candidate will provide strategic guidance, drive technological advancement, and assess data across the preclinical scientific team, progressing drug targets from discovery through clinical development and representing Regeneron’s muscle therapeutics strategy to Senior Leadership and externally.

Responsibilities

  • Establish the strategic framework for muscle biology research, including identification of new therapeutic targets—particularly for genetic diseases—and incorporation of emerging technologies into the research pipeline.
  • Design, coordinate, and supervise complex in vitro and in vivo studies investigating muscle development, physiological and metabolic function, regeneration, and disease mechanisms.
  • Guide and manage a team of scientists, research associates, and technical professionals to deliver rigorous, impactful research results.
  • Lead and set clear short- and long-term objectives to ensure quality scientific output.
  • Oversee project workflows, make decisions regarding project continuation, and facilitate the transition of drug targets through development stages.
  • Engage in cross-functional and leadership meetings, contributing expertise in muscle cell biology and advocating the team’s vision.
  • Promote collaboration between therapeutic areas and technology groups, fostering relationships to enhance research outcomes.
  • Review and authorize muscle-related documentation, including regulatory submissions, manuscripts, and contracts.

Qualifications

  • Experience with cutting-edge technologies and their application to muscular disorders (e.g., siRNA, shRNA, CRISPR/Cas9, AAVs) is advantageous.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; ability to articulate scientific concepts and strategic vision.
  • Proven leadership, managerial, and mentorship abilities; ability to work in a matrix environment.
  • Experience in group administration, including budget and organizational management.
  • Exposure to drug development or regulated activities is highly desirable.
  • Strong professional network, publication record, and national/international reputation preferred.
  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Biomedicine, Biochemistry, Human Biology, Human Skeletal or Exercise Physiology, or related discipline.
  • Extensive cellular and molecular biology expertise in muscle biology and metabolism is desirable.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years post-PhD experience and 2-5 years in industry or translational settings preferred.
