Purpose:
The Associate Director, Instrumentation serves as the technical authority/SME for field instrumentation and control systems supporting large-scale biopharmaceutical capital projects across GMP manufacturing facilities and utility systems. Partners with internal engineering/automation/operations/quality/validation and external EPCM firms to deliver safe, compliant, reliable, and maintainable solutions. Supports AI and digital innovation (e.g., Factory of the Future).

Responsibilities:
- Own instrumentation design authority; lead owner instrumentation team and oversee contractor design activities.
- Establish engineering standards and execution strategies; provide technical leadership for instrumentation selection/specification/integration and lifecycle management.
- Ensure consistent instrumentation architecture across global projects/sites.
- Review/approve instrumentation deliverables (datasheets, indexes, I/O lists, loop drawings, cause/effect matrices, control philosophy narrative, P&IDs, network/architecture drawings, panel/cabling/tray specs, shielding, ATEX ratings, valve sizing/calculations, data sheets).
- Support design reviews, HAZOPs, constructability reviews, FAT/SAT, and operational readiness.
- Plan/budget/procure/negotiate; develop schedules for instrumentation packages.
- Review vendor submittals for process/automation/cybersecurity/GMP alignment.
- Ensure integration across field instruments, PLC/DCS/SCADA and MES; define control strategies, alarm management, and data integrity.
- Lead commissioning strategy/execution; develop commissioning plans/test scripts/turnover/startup procedures.
- Ensure GMP/ISA/IEC/NEMA compliance for specification, procurement, installation, calibration, testing, documentation; coordinate with CQV for qualification handover.
- Troubleshoot startup/operational instrumentation & controls issues.

Qualifications:
- BS in relevant engineering (Master’s preferred).
- 12+ years in field instrumentation/controls in process industry.
- Experience supporting large capital projects ($500MM–$1B+).
- Deep expertise in instruments, control devices, transmitters, communication protocols, analyzers.
- Experience managing engineering contractors and global equipment vendors.
- Results-oriented leadership; strong negotiation and risk-based decision-making.
- Ability to mentor next-gen leaders.
- Travel required.
