Purpose:
Associate Director of HVAC provides owner-side leadership and technical governance for the design, integration, and delivery of HVAC and mechanical infrastructure supporting large biopharmaceutical capital projects. Serves as Design Authority for HVAC and mechanical systems to meet manufacturing requirements, GMP standards, reliability expectations, and regulatory compliance. Oversees EPC contractor engineering activities and integration between process systems, utilities, automation, and facility infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as ownerβs senior engineering leader and design authority for HVAC/mechanical systems.
- Lead utilities and mechanical engineering team; provide technical oversight of EPC contractor design.
- Establish engineering standards and execution strategies.
- Govern design of GMP critical/non-critical HVAC and mechanical systems (cleanrooms/controlled environments, AHUs/environmental controls, manufacturing mechanical equipment, piping, fire suppression, fire/heat detection).
- Develop facility HVAC classification philosophy, pressure cascades/control philosophy; define HEPA filtration, airflow concepts, and AHU coverage.
- Drive vendor/contractor selection; review specifications/RFP/bids and provide technical recommendations.
- Use cradle-to-grave approach: deliverables review/approval, FAT/SAT participation, installation/start-up support.
- Ensure designs meet GMP, reliability, operational needs, and contamination control; support integration and system architecture/commissioning boundaries.
- Support energy efficiency/sustainability via technology-assisted pressure/air supply control.
- Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews; review deliverables (descriptions, calculations, specifications); resolve complex technical issues.
- Support startup and operational readiness; drive transformation and AI/digitalization; control cost/schedule for HVAC systems and vendor hardware/software.
Qualifications:
- BS in Engineering (or equivalent); Masterβs preferred.
- 12+ years as HVAC/mechanical principal engineer/lead across multiple technologies.
- Proven leadership in HVAC/mechanical scope for mega-capital projects ($500MMβ$1B+).
- Deep knowledge of HVAC design, codes, operations, systems, and architecture.
- Inclusive leadership of large cross-functional teams; communicate with senior leadership/executives.
- Experience managing engineering contractors and global equipment vendors.
- Results-oriented leadership; negotiation skills; risk-based decision making.
- Ability to mentor/develop next-gen leaders.
- Travel within the US and outside the US for reviews/workshops/visits to vendor facilities.
