Associate Director of EHS - Strategic Projects

In this role, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams (Engineering, Operations, etc.) to ensure EHS is built into the design & engineering phase of the North Carolina site from design to manufacturing.

Key Objectives/Deliverables:
- Act as the EHS liaison with project stakeholders and Global EHS
- Develop, establish, and sustain EHS systems, processes, and programs
- Ensure regulatory compliance (e.g., evaluating environmental impacts)
- Safety by Design: anticipate and eliminate potential issues during design/engineering
- Embed safety considerations for Artificial Intelligence and new technologies
- Engage site resources to build an interdependent safety culture
- Provide EHS technical support
- Implement AbbVie internal technical standards and EHS network best practices
- Introduce automated tools/technology for safety compliance, analysis, and evaluation
- Partner with the construction company to ensure contractor employee health & safety

Responsibilities:
- Align deliverables with broader organizational direction; monitor trends and drive continuous improvement
- Monitor regulatory requirements/enforcement trends; conduct impact analyses; implement compliance action plans
- Identify root causes, develop recommendations/alternatives, and create models/systems to address issues/opportunities
- Develop and implement global programs, policies, and procedures; develop/report EHS KPIs
- Summarize/report compliance status, strengths, priority issues, and ensure corrective actions
- Lead/direct staff; promote teamwork, coaching, development, and manage performance
- Represent EHS on cross-functional teams
- Global scope: represent company externally, prepare/contribute to sustainability and regulatory reports, minimize EHS liability, and investigate EHS incidents

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s (EHS/Science/Engineering) + 10+ years EHS experience OR Master’s (EHS/Science/Engineering) + 8–10 years
- Experience implementing EHS regulations, conducting incident investigations, working with regulatory agencies, and leading cross-functional teams
- Ability to plan/balance resources to achieve targets; rapid assessment and corrective procedure development
- Strong relationship-building, conflict resolution, decision-making, influencing, and negotiation
- Ability to manage projects/programs

Additional Skills/Preferences:
- Presenting EHS KPIs to senior leadership; GMP manufacturing experience; major capital projects/Greenfield sites
- Preferred certifications: project management; CSP/CIH; EHS professional certification preferred (not required); manufacturing/R&D EHS experience
