General Summary
- Vertex is seeking a Senior Research Scientist to join Analytical Development in Boston, MA.
- Leads analytical chemistry activities across all stages of clinical development for the Chromatography SME team focused on small molecules and synthetic peptides/oligonucleotides (drug substance, drug product intermediates, and drug product).

Key Duties And Responsibilities
- Lead chromatographic method development, qualification, and validation.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to design, oversee, and review analytical methods, validation protocols, and reports.
- Serve as a technical expert in chromatographic instrumentation and method development (specialized detectors, column screening, forced degradation, robustness studies).
- Drive continuous improvement in analytical development and validation practices.
- Ensure consistent, compliant method development and validation across the organization.
- Design and execute complex, technically challenging experiments.
- Interpret data and draw evidence-based conclusions.
- Develop innovative technical solutions; provide scientific guidance.
- Contribute to project strategy and critical scientific activities.
- Support organizational capability through training, mentorship, and knowledge sharing.
- Apply approaches from other fields to advance scientific progress.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge And Skills / Qualifications
- Deep experience in analytical method development and validation.
- Strong chromatography expertise (GC, LC, GC-MS, LC-MS, Karl Fischer, spectroscopy).
- Ability in troubleshooting, data review, and interpretation.
- Strong understanding of pharmaceutical regulations, guidelines, and GMP.
- Excellent organizational, project management, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to explain technical concepts and influence stakeholders.
- Effective in team/matrix and independent work; manage multiple priorities; strong attention to detail.
- Ability to mentor and identify productive experimental approaches.

Education And Experience
- Ph.D. with 2+ years, or Master’s with 5+ years in relevant analytical development; or B.S. with 8+ years advanced industry experience.

Pay/Benefits (if part of job description)
- Base pay range: $122,400–$183,600. Eligible for annual bonus and annual equity awards.

Flex Designation
- On-site: five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.
