Position Overview:
Scientist (individual contributor) to join the New Approach Methodologies (NAMs)/Complex In Vitro Models (CIVMs) pillar within Lillyβs Investigative Toxicology group, primarily laboratory-based.
Key Responsibilities:
- Qualify and apply human-relevant in vitro cardiovascular models (hiPSC-CMs, hiPSC-ECs, 2D electrophysiology monolayers, 3D EHTs, cardiac organoids, vessel-on-a-chip).
- Conduct mechanistic investigations into proarrhythmia, QT/AP prolongation, structural cardiomyopathy, mitochondrial cardiotoxicity, DIVI, and endothelial dysfunction/barrier disruption.
- Implement and qualify cardiac safety readouts (MEA field potentials, calcium flux imaging, sarcomere shortening/contractility assays, impedance platforms); adopt emerging technologies to improve translational relevance (CiPA and beyond).
- Use 3D platforms (EHTs/COs) for mechanistic studies and chronic dosing to capture structural cardiotoxicity and vascular injury endpoints.
- Serve as primary scientific resource for follow-on in vitro cardiovascular safety investigations.
- Collaborate with in silico ADMET Intelligence to integrate computational predictions with in vitro mechanistic data.
- Evaluate emerging cardiovascular NAMs technologies and recommend platforms for adoption.
- Act as scientific point of contact for CROs/academics; coordinate study design, data quality, and deliverables.
- Stay current on regulatory/consortium developments; participate in pre-competitive consortia; publish/present externally.
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD (Pharmacology, Physiology, Biomedical Engineering, Toxicology, or related) with training in cardiac biology, vascular biology, or cardiovascular electrophysiology.
- Advisor (R5): PhD + 2+ years postdoc/industry; hands-on advanced cardiovascular in vitro models.
- Senior Advisor (R6): PhD + 5+ years; independent contribution, model qualification, and leadership.
- Hands-on experience with at least one: hiPSC-CM differentiation/functional characterization; MEA proarrhythmia (APD/FPD, CiPA-aligned); 3D EHT functional assessment; endothelial cell/vessel-on-a-chip for DIVI/inflammation/barrier disruption.
- Independently design/implement experiments; manage concurrent projects; prioritize under timelines.
