Position Overview

Eli Lilly and Company is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Beamline Engineer to join the Structural Biology team within Lilly Small Molecule Discovery (LSMD), part of Lilly Research Laboratories. LSMD is a dynamic and diverse organization committed to advancing drug discovery through innovation and scientific excellence. The successful candidate will join the LRL-CAT beamline, which operates a state-of-the-art synchrotron beamline at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) for macromolecular crystallography experiments that support structure-based drug design (SBDD) efforts across Lilly’s research portfolio.

As a Beamline Engineer, you will play a critical role in the operation, maintenance, and evolution of the LRL-CAT beamline. You will work collaboratively with structural biologists, engineers, and external partners to ensure high-quality data collection and delivery from challenging drug discovery targets. This role is hands-on, technical, and vital to our mission to discover and develop innovative therapies for patients.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Eli Lilly and Company with high-quality X-ray diffraction data to support structure-based drug design.
  • Manage samples from Lilly for both on-site (LRL-CAT) and off-site data collection.
  • Assist with off-site data collection.
  • Set up, align, and operate the LRL-CAT beamline for routine data collection, process diffraction data, and deliver results to users; troubleshoot and resolve issues to ensure continuous operation.
  • Oversee automated data collection at LRL-CAT and collect or reprocess datasets as needed.
  • Collaborate with and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Maintain and upgrade beamline components, including but not limited to, focusing mirrors, X-ray beam monitor amplifiers, sample cryostream, water-cooling and LNâ‚‚ infrastructure, Venturi system, and dehumidifiers. Share responsibility for the maintenance of high-precision beamline motors, vacuum systems, and safety.
  • Coordinate with vendors for the maintenance and repair of specialized beamline equipment, including those listed above.
  • Co-maintain the data processing pipeline software.
  • Manage proprietary and General User samples and collect data for these users.
  • Support the maintenance and optimization of beamline control software.
  • Design, procure, install, and commission beamline upgrades.
  • Coordinate with Advanced Photon Source staff to support daily beamline operations.

Basic Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Engineering.
  • At least 1 year of experience working as an engineer at a macromolecular crystallography synchrotron beamline.
  • At least 3 years of technical experience at a synchrotron beamline.

Additional Skills

  • Experience in operating and maintaining automated sample handlers typically used in Macromolecular Crystallography beamlines.
  • Knowledge of machining capabilities, motor motion controls, and electronic components, as well as computers and computer networks.
  • Knowledge of macromolecular X-ray crystallography, including crystal growth, mounting, data collection, and processing.
  • Skills in troubleshooting, diagnostics, and independent judgment in technical problem-solving.
  • Ability to rapidly learn in an environment that requires multi-disciplinary skills.
  • Expertise in the maintenance and diagnostic techniques applicable to synchrotron beamline instrumentation and operations.
  • Experience supporting and operating complex and large-scale instrumentation in a scientific user environment.
  • Experience with EPICS, CCP4 suite, common MX data processing software, Linux shell environments, and Linux distributions.
  • Proficiency with Python and Oracle-based LIMS.
  • Experience interacting with scientific staff and beamline users.
  • Experience with computer networking.
  • Highly self-motivated and proactive.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Compensation and Benefits

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is

$123,750 - $198,000

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
