Role Summary

The 2026 Summer Intern PhD Student Drug Delivery role is an internship within the Drug Product Development (DPD) function. The project focuses on developing novel formulations and processes for clinical and commercial drug products, exploring immediate-release to long-acting injectable formulations, and building IVIVCs for subcutaneous and intramuscular injections in preclinical species.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct feasibility experiments with formulation technologies, including formulation development, chemical and physical characterization, and in vitro release profiling.
  • Perform in vitro-in vivo correlation (IVIVC) work using PBPK models and pharmacokinetic modeling.
  • Engage in wet-lab and dry-lab activities as part of a guided research project within a PD Project Team.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited university program pursuing a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Science, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical or Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline; expected to graduate between Fall 2026 and end of 2027.
  • GPA of 3.0 or greater (must be included on resume).
  • Prior experience with product design and novel delivery technologies, and testing in vitro and in vivo is preferred (e.g., polymer-based formulations, oil-based formulations, crystalline drug suspensions).
  • Hands-on lab experience; solid understanding of pharmaceutical science principles (physical pharmacy, chemistry, stability, biochemistry).
  • Strong problem-solving, independent contributor, and teamwork skills; excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Authorized to work in the US for the duration of employment; no immigration or visa sponsorship available for this position.

Additional Requirements

  • Position is temporary for the duration of the internship (~10 weeks) with in-person work in New Brunswick, NJ.
  • In-person interns residing more than 50 miles from the work location may be eligible for travel or housing stipends.
