Role Summary

2026 1L Summer Associate at AbbVie. Summer associates will be immersed in AbbVie’s in-house legal and compliance teams, learning about and handling real-world matters under the supervision of AbbVie attorneys and compliance officers. The program offers rotations across multiple academies, exposing participants to patent, clinical R&D, corporate, strategic transactions, global commercial, operations/privacy/tech, litigation/employment/compliance, and ethics and compliance disciplines. Participants will research and present on a legal or compliance issue and will receive guidance from a manager and mentor.

Responsibilities

  • Rotate through one or more academies within the in-house legal or compliance teams.
  • Work on tasks across patent prosecution, IP litigation, clinical-trial legal matters, regulatory matters, corporate financing, securities compliance, strategic transactions, commercial legal guidance, operations and privacy projects, litigation and compliance matters, and ethics/compliance activities.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis; participate in strategy meetings and provide support on various matters relevant to AbbVie’s pipelines and regulatory framework.
  • Research and present on a legal or compliance issue related to assigned work; meet with in-house and outside counsel and compliance professionals; receive guidance from a manager and mentor for professional development.
  • Engage in policy assessments, training development, investigations, and cross-functional collaboration as part of the Office of Ethics and Compliance or related teams.

Qualifications

  • Students must complete their 1L year at an ABA-accredited law school during 2025-2026.
  • Must be enrolled in law school the semester following the internship.
  • Strong undergraduate academic background; relevant disciplines preferred for certain academies (e.g., science/engineering for Patent Legal Academy, recommended for Clinical R&D).
  • Ability to perform complex legal research and analysis; excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills.
  • Statement describing how the internship will be career-transformative and enable leadership within the legal profession or community.

Education

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in a scientific or engineering discipline is required for Patent Legal Academy; recommended for Clinical R&D Legal Academy.

Additional Requirements

  • Preference for applications received by January 12, 2026.
  • Salary: $1,910 per week for an 11-week program ($21,010).
